George Osborne declared “the economy is healing” today as Britain narrowly escaped an unprecedented triple-dip recession

To the relief of the Chancellor, official figures showed growth of 0.3 per cent in the first three months of the year. That was higher than the 0.1 per cent forecast by analysts, and averted the humiliation of two consecutive negative quarters — which would have counted as a third recession since the 2008 crash.
